Protecting your hair while sleeping is tricky, especially if you’re born with fine, curly, or natural hair that can be disturbed during sleep. Thankfully, there’s a solution: opting for hairstyles that better prevent pulling and frizzing can help you sleep more peacefully knowing your hair is protected overnight. We asked professional hairstylists for their favorite, client-approved ways to protect hair while sleeping.

Can Our Hair Get Damaged Overnight?
Unfortunately, yes. Certain types of hair—such as fine or brittle textures—can be susceptible to hair loss, especially while sleeping. When we’re asleep, our hair is affected by tangling, loss of moisture, and friction caused by quick, unconscious movements. Sleeping with wet hair can also contribute to sleep-induced damage; just like wet hair is more likely to break post-shower, the same applies to going to bed with wet hair. It’s always best to hit the sack once your hair is completely dry.

Try Braids and Twists
If you have curly or coily hair, braids and twists are an excellent choice for overnight hairstyles, according to Susie Geda, founder and creative director of Bibo Salon. ”This can help maintain your curl pattern and minimize tangling,” she says.
Loose braids are also a go-to for clients with extensions, says Nickie Alton, hair extension specialist at the Canyon Salon and Extension Bar. “The best practice is to hydrate them first, brush through thoroughly, and then secure them in a loose braid before bed.”
Use a Hair Wrap or Scarf
“Use a silk or satin scarf to wrap your hair before sleeping,” Geda suggests. “This helps to keep your hair contained and reduces friction.” The best part about using a hair wrap or scarf is that it doesn’t matter what style your hair is in—as long as it’s wrapped up, you’re good to go.
Tie Hair in a Low Bun or Ponytail
If you have extensions, a low bun or ponytail is the best way to protect these locks while ensuring they last as long as possible, according to Nikki Corzine, owner of the Canyon Salon and Extension Bar. “You can also put hair oil in to keep it hydrated,” she suggests. Make sure to follow your stylist-suggested hair care routine before throwing your extensions into a low bun or ponytail.
Go with the Pineapple Method
The pineapple method has been popular for a while, and for good reason. The method suggests gathering all of your hair at the crown of your head and tying it into a loose top knot, especially if you have long, thick, curly hair. “This keeps your curls from flattening and reduces tangles,” Geda says.
Opt for a Silk Pillowcase
