The 13 Best Fancy Hand Soaps, From Aesop to Loewe

When did hand soaps get so sophisticated? Perhaps it was inevitable due to the increasingly competitive [tips Monopoly Man top hat] skincare market; it was only a matter of time until I started collecting unique, fragrant, well-packaged hand soaps like Pokémon. But as someone who loves to cook, using a high-quality soap with a nice scent and making sure my hands feel fresh, hydrated, and free of eau de minced garlic or balsamic vinegar feels especially important.

Washing your hands, while necessary for practical reasons, should feel less like a chore and more like a spa experience. Yes, as far as the finer soaps go, of course we must show reverence (no pun intended) for Aesop’s epicly popular hand wash, but it’s not the only one out there. I am a proud devotee of tomato-scented suds, self-proclaimed herbaceous formulas, and the latest hand soap iteration of the smoky, Icelandic sitka spruce fragrance from the perfumerie of Sigur Ros’ frontman. What you will find below: a curation of hand soaps that lean into an herb garden-forward olfactory experience; hand soaps that feel like they could have been handed down to you from The Giving Tree, or else crafted with a mortar and pestle in a lush Mediterranean estate. What you won’t find below is a smorgasbord of saccharine, overpowering, or flowery hand washes and soaps. (Sorry, Pink Sugar loyalists.)

The way we smell matters, both to ourselves and those in our orbit. Compared to most of the perfumes I pine after, some of the best fancy hand soaps below are also much less expensive, but still succeed in their common goal of making you smell nice, look worldly, and feel, well, fancy. If you love to cook and want a little TLC for your hands, I have rounded up my marquee selection of the best fancy hand soaps for every budget.

The best fancy hand soaps under $30

This Le Labo Santal 33 dupe (is quite possibly my favorite)

| Method

Method Gel Hand Soap, Vetiver + Amber (3 Pack)

Prices taken at time of publishing.

It feels illegal to know about this was the thought I first had upon smelling Method’s Vetiver + Amber hand soap, which is a shockingly successful dupe for Le Labo’s $83 Santal 33 hand soap, which has become something of an olfactory icon, known for its ability to deliver my personal holy trinity of scent profiles: woodsy, sweet, and slightly spicy. A single bottle of Method’s suds will cost you under $8 on Grove, but I recently bought this three-pack on Amazon to make sure my kitchen and restroom are well-stocked – plus, it’s always nice to have a spare bottle as a host gift.

An extra-hydrating vetiver scent

Apotheke White Vetiver Liquid Hand Soap.

| Apotheke

Apotheke White Vetiver Liquid Hand Soap

Apotheke has made a name for itself thanks to its hand-poured candles and unique scents, including a collaboration with Shake Shack that was surprisingly enticing (I still think about the Burger in the Park candle). The brand’s vetiver-scented hand wash looks and feels way more expensive than it is thanks to its minimalist, matte packaging and inclusion of coconut and aloe for extra hydration.

Soap on a rope? So European

Claus Porto Musgo Soap on a Rope.

| Claus Porto

Claus Porto Musgo Soap on a Rope

Prices taken at time of publishing.

Don’t talk to me until I have had my soap on a rope. Seriously, though: Claus Porto’s chic, sandalwood-forward soap comes from a heritage of soap company inspired by Portugal’s natural landscapes, flora, and fauna.

This French classic that you can now buy on Amazon…

La Compagnie de Provence Savon de Marseille.

| Savon de Marseille

La Compagnie de Provence Savon de Marseille

A friend’s southern French grandmother once told me that Savon de Marseille is the best soap for people with irritable skin because it uses olive oil, which has naturally cleansing and hydrating properties. Luckily, you don’t have to head to Provence to cop a bottle yourself. There’s a variety of hand soap fragrances available online from Compagnie de Provence, including this refreshing citrus blend.

…And a new French classic

Maison Louis Marie Body and Hand Wash Antidris Cassis.

| Maison Louis Marie

Maison Louis Marie Body and Hand Wash Antidris Cassis

Prices taken at time of publishing.

Maison Louis Marie is, above all, a brand interested in the romance of botanicals. Inspired by his ancestor, the 18th-century French botanist Louis Marie Aubert du Petit Thouars, Marie du Petit Thouars founded the brand in 2012 to continue the family tradition of seeking out clean ingredients and nostalgic scents. The brand’s Cassis hand (and body) wash is one of the fruitier picks on our list with top notes of cassis, bergamot, and black pepper, but it’s tempered with a base of oakmoss and musk.

This Aesop dupe that’s perfect for a refillable dispenser

Element Brooklyn Mandarin Hand Soap Refill.

| Element Brooklyn

Element Brooklyn Mandarin Hand Soap Refill

Prices taken at time of publishing.

Element Brooklyn makes affordable, bottle-free, unabashed dupes for luxury skincare brands such as Aesop. The Mandarin refill is renowned on Reddit for its ability to replace Aesop’s beloved Resurrection Aromatique Hand Wash — but for half the price, and without the waste of a bottle.

The best fancy hand soaps under $50

Let Aesop, king of herbaceous scents, lead the way

Aesop Resurrection Aromatique Hand Wash.

| Aesop

Aesop Resurrection Aromatique Hand Wash

You can’t outdo the doer. Aesop’s now iconic Resurrection hand wash has populated the sinks of some of the world’s most famous establishments and celebrity homes, and it does kind of makes me feel more worldly when I use it; it’s like the notes of mandarin rind, rosemary, and cedar bloom upon washing without ever overpowering each other. In sum: it’s feels like a holistic spa experience in a single bottle.

The winner of the tomato-scented hand soaps is: Flamingo Estate

If you want warmth (but not sweetness), opt for cardamom and cinnamon

Homecourt Cece Hand Wash.

| Homecourt

Homecourt Cece Hand Wash

Prices taken at time of publishing.

I discovered Homecourt — aka Courtney Cox’s brand venture into skincare — in the restrooms of Field + Fort, a Summerland, California boutique-cafe enclave that always seems to be one step ahead on the best luxury home goods. The Cece hand wash is possibly the sweetest or warmest offering on our list, because it brings in cardamom and cinnamon, but it also has notes of cedarwood and white leather.

The best very fancy hand soaps

Diptyque’s regal soap is extra-softening for hands

Diptyque Softening Hand Wash.

| Diptyque

Diptyque Softening Hand Wash

Prices taken at time of publishing.

Princely hands, look no further than Diptyque’s softening hand wash, which is an absolute splurge and incontestable delight — just look at that embossed glass bottle! In true French fashion, it includes notes of lavender and rosemary, but with warm accents of amber and ylang-ylang, as well as a touch of honey, which has a reputation as a skin-softening agent.

Loewe’s Oregano is the perfect blend of peppery and woody

Loewe Oregano Liquid Soap.

| Loewe

Loewe Oregano Liquid Soap

Prices taken at time of publishing.

Let’s make a little noise for Loewe’s oregano-centric hand soap, which, like Diptyque’s soaps, also comes in an alluring glass bottle that could contend with some of my nicest perfume bottles. If you want to capture the nonchalant appeal of a Mediterranean herb garden, this is your best bet.

Byredo’s musky, pear-kissed scent

Byredo Suede Hand Care Wash.

| Amazon

Byredo Suede Hand Care Wash

Prices taken at time of publishing.

Byredo has blessed us with a hand soap that’s mature and musky, but not in a Men’s Warehouse way; hints of pear and bergamot bring a little levity — and versatility — to the otherwise earthy soap. If you have yet to find the perfect Mother’s Day gift, consider pairing it with a eucalyptus-forward floral bouquet for a chic, non-stuffy gift.

Baccarat Rouge 540… in hand wash form

Maison Francis Kurkdjian Baccarat Rouge 540 Hand and Body Cleansing Gel.

| Maison Francis Kurkdjian

Maison Francis Kurkdjian Baccarat Rouge 540 Hand and Body Cleansing Gel

Prices taken at time of publishing.

If you have never before read the words Baccarat Rouge 540, congratulations: you are not nearly as steeped as we are in the internet perfume discourse around the super-trendy scent, which is described by Francis Kurkdjian as a harmonious combination of amber and woody floral notes. You just know Frasier Crane had a bottle of this in his penthouse apartment — and it’s sure to make a statement by your sink.

Happy washing.
