The Best Outdoor Furniture Covers We Tested

If you’re fortunate enough to have a patio, you also likely have outdoor furniture that needs protection. An outdoor furniture cover that fits well and stays put through all weather conditions—rain, snow, and wind—is the best way to ensure your furniture lasts year after year.

We tested multiple models at home for over a year, seeing how they held up in unexpected rain showers and protected our furniture from the UV rays of the sun and animals, too.

While some covers can cost hundreds, others are less than $50. It all depends on the size and durability of the cover and the material it’s made of—we recommend polyester and other synthetic performance fabrics. Ensuring your furniture is protected will save you money in the long run if it means not buying new patio furniture each season.

Whether you have a sofa, dining set, lounger, or Adirondack chair to protect from the elements, we tested them all to find the ones you should be adding to your shopping cart.

After a year of testing, the ease of use, generous size for the price, and the durable, waterproof fabric of the Amazon Basics 3-Seater Deep Lounge Sofa Cover is our number one pick for best outdoor furniture covers.

The UV-resistant cover took just 45 seconds to put on our couch and 30 seconds to remove. We were pleasantly surprised to find our couch cushions completely dry even after a long, soaking rainstorm. The cover also protected our couch during some minor snow accumulation. It appears to have protected our furniture from UV rays, and despite having a plethora of chipmunks around the backyard, we noticed no critter damage.

A drawstring cord kept the cover in place during 25 mph winds, but it was tricky to tighten. There are straps to help hold it in place, but they didn’t work with our couch’s design.

The cover may also be a bit short for a couch with tall legs, but we would recommend having the cover go all the way to the ground to prevent leaves from blowing under the sofa and rain from splashing up from the ground. You’ll want to measure your furniture before ordering and make sure the cover is at least two inches larger in length and width than your furniture.

We took a close look at the cover after six months and one year of being out in the rain and snow, noting any changes in quality. While it had some small dust and dirt marks at six months and a bit of green mildew on the outside after a year, it was practically in the same condition. After removing the cover, we were happy to see all marks were on the outside of the cover only, not our furniture.

Most covers are designed to protect a single piece of furniture, like a chair or sofa. Others, like the Ruimoy table and chair cover, can protect numerous items, replacing multiple covers and saving you loads of cash.

We fit a wicker sectional (with four sections), a chair, and a fire pit table all under the Ruimoy and still had some room left. While we wish it were a bit longer so wind and animals couldn’t get underneath, we were shocked at the amount of furniture we could pile under it. It was also surprisingly easy to fit over all the furniture, taking just one person five minutes to cover everything.

Made of polyester reminiscent of a high-quality grill or smoker cover, the cover comes with cords and buckles that help it stay in place during rain and wind throughout our year of testing. We noticed no tears, fading, or discoloration. In fact, creases on the cover from being folded in the packaging actually smoothed out over time, so it ended up looking even better than the day we got it.

Amazon F&J Outdoors Patio Furniture Covers

For over a year, the F&J Outdoors extra-large cover hasn’t had to be cleaned or fixed, and it’s worked covering our table and four chairs from rain, wind, sun, and snow. Our chairs didn’t even fit under our table, but we were able to push them as close as possible and were pleasantly surprised that the cover had no problem protecting the entire set.

Thick enough to protect our dining set, but lightweight and easy to maneuver, the cover has strong stitches and seams, plus a waterproof coating. We did notice some water pooling on top of the chairs at one point, but realized it was due to the design of our chairs, and were able to fix it by putting a cinder block on the table to lift the cover. Once we did that, our chairs stayed dry, even though the cinching is not as tight as we would like, and some of the cover did blow off on a windy day.

After a year of daily use, the cover has successfully protected our furniture from snow, ice, wind, rain, and sun and shows no signs of wear and tear. We even used it to cover a couch, and it protected it just as well as it did our dining set.

Sizes Available: 5 | Dimensions: From 62 by 27.5 in. to 110 by 27.25 in. | Material: Tear-resistant plaid fabric with premium coating | Waterproof: Yes

ULTCOVER Waterproof Outdoor Sofa Cover

Outdoor couches can be a cozy and relaxing addition to your patio, but they also require a pretty large furniture cover. We were so impressed at this Ultcover waterproof sofa cover, which we used to protect a furniture set made of Eucalyptus wood, that we even bought more of this same type for the rest of our furniture. We’ve had it for over a year and the furniture is still in great shape.

The cover is made of thick polyester and has large clasps and a bungee cord, which help secure it in place if it’s larger than the furniture. The cover protected our furniture from rain, wind, snow, leaves, sticks, and tree debris—and the odd squirrel that would run over our furniture. Air vents on the side of the cover prevent mold and mildew from growing on the furniture.

Amazon Classic Accessories Veranda 60 Inch Patio Cushion and Cover Storage Bag
PHOTO: Amazon

If you have cushioned furniture, you’ll need to protect your outdoor cushions, even if you’re storing them in the garage or a storage shed. This storage bag covered all of our outdoor patio cushions, with plenty of room to spare, and keeps the cushions protected from excess water and pests while indoors.

We love that it’s tough enough to withstand outdoor elements but so lightweight that it’s easy to carry around even when full. Handles on the top and sides make moving it a breeze, and the thick bottom offers added protection. While it’s water resistant, it’s not waterproof, so you have to store it inside somewhere still.

Easy to open and close thanks to a zipper that moves in both directions, it took just a few minutes to unzip and load it up. We stored it in a basement over the winter, taking the cushions back out in the spring. The bag quality didn’t change after a year of use, and our cushions still look the same.

If you’d prefer to keep your cushions on the furniture when you cover them, you’ll want to go with a different cover like the Ultcover waterproof sofa cover. If you don’t mind taking an extra few minutes and have room to store them inside, though, we can’t recommend this bag enough.

Final Verdict

Our top pick is the Amazon Basics 3-Seater Deep Lounge Sofa Outdoor Patio Furniture Cover due to its ease of setup, extra-long length to perfectly cover a couch, and ability to repel rain and sun damage. For a budget-friendly pick instead, we recommend the Ruimoy Outside Table and Chair Cover.

Our Testing Process

To find the best outdoor furniture covers, we tested multiple models at home for a year. First, we inspected the quality of the fabric, stitching, and seams, and the strength of any clasps, clips, or ties. We placed the cover over our furniture and secured it in place.

Next, we examined how well each cover protected our outdoor furniture, noting days with extreme weather, including high winds, storms, or a high UV index. After weeks of daily testing, we removed the cover and inspected the furniture for any damage. We then did the same at six months and again after one year.

Throughout the testing period, we took notes regarding how well the cover fit over our furniture, whether it needed to be adjusted, how well it stayed in place through various weather conditions, if we saw any fading and/or shrinkage, and how protected the furniture was from water. We used these insights to rate each outdoor furniture cover on quality, performance, durability, fit, and value.

How to Shop for Outdoor Furniture Covers Like a Pro

Size and Fit

Outdoor furniture covers come in multiple shapes and sizes to protect outdoor chairs, tables, and loveseats. You should always measure your furniture before ordering a cover to ensure it will fit properly. Some covers, like the Amazon Basics cover, are made for larger items, while others, like the Duck Covers waterproof cover, are a better choice for small items like a chair.

It’s also important to keep a few tricks in mind, like stacking chairs so you only need one cover. And if you have a lot of furniture, it’s a good idea to purchase a cover that is large and flexible enough to cover a group of furniture, like the Ruimoy table and chair cover, instead of spending money on multiple covers.

Material and Durability Features

Most outdoor furniture covers are waterproof, or at least water-resistant, and have a UV-protectant coating to shield your furniture from rain, snow, and sun damage. That coating can help the furniture to resist fading, while the water-resistance helps keep mold and mildew from appearing on your furniture. The best outdoor furniture covers also protect furniture during high winds by offering multiple fastenings to keep them secure during a storm.

Come spring cleaning time, water-resistance is even more important if you want to wash down your furniture or covers or your patio in general. We like acrylic or synthetic performance fabric best, like the Classic Accessories cover.

Care

Outdoor furniture covers are meant to protect the furniture underneath from rain, snow, and sun, but that doesn’t mean they don’t need some attention once in a while, too. You’ll want to choose a cover that is easy to clean, preferably by hosing down or simply wiping clean before removing it from your furniture.
