The First and Only Indoor Smoker of its Kind

The First and Only Indoor Smoker of its Kind

I’ve been told I have a bit of an obsession with grills and smokers. In an effort to fuel my obsession, I’ve painstakingly researched over 600 grills and smokers and personally tested over 40 of them. My backyard often resembles a showroom featuring a seemingly never-ending rotation of outdoor appliances.

Most recently, I was given the opportunity to test GE’s new Smart Indoor Smoker. After putting it through its paces over the course of a few weeks, I’ve experienced firsthand a smarter and easier way to practice the art of smoking from the comfort of my indoor kitchen.

This beginner-friendly indoor smoker offers a genuine smoker experience for people who want to invest in a quality product. While the GE Profile Smart Indoor Smoker is  much more compact than an outdoor smoker (it measures 16.5 by 20.5 inches), it still requires about the same amount of countertop space as a big toaster oven. It’s also much heavier, weighing in at roughly 45 pounds, so once you put it somewhere, it’s likely going to stay there.

I’ll be honest, prior to using this smoker, I was a bit skeptical about how effective the integrated active smoke filtration system would be. However, the first time I used this product I was pleasantly surprised by how well the filtration system works. Once the smoker is finished preheating and the cooking chamber begins to fill with smoke, the filtration system ensures absolutely nothing but warm air is released via the rear exhaust vents. There is a faint aroma of smoke emitted from the smoker, but the smell is certainly not overpowering nor unpleasant – I’ve found it comparable to the aromas you might experience when using an oven.

In terms of performance, this smoker is a fantastic choice for beginners and seasoned pit masters alike. This smoker requires very little input from the user and consistently yields flavorful, juicy, and tender smoked meats. The preheating process is quick, and the smoking chamber has excellent heat retention properties to generate well-regulated temperatures in order to achieve precise cook times.

I particularly liked being able to control the level of smoke with the turn of a dial to better suit the foods I was cooking. While preparing smoked turkey legs, I used the most intense smoke level to smoke the legs at 275°F for about 2 hours – the results were much better than I expected and even better than some outdoor smokers I’ve used before. I was able to use the included wired-probe thermometer to continuously track the internal temperature of the legs and the control panel notified me once my target temperature was reached. The finished turkey legs were imbued with a delicately smoky flavor and they developed a noticeable smoke ring that was both pleasing to my eyes and my palate. It’s impressive how well this smoker performs and it even exceeds my expectations compared to more high-end outdoor smokers – all while being able to operate within an indoor kitchen.

The smoker includes all of the accessories you need to get started, like a wired-probe thermometer, a premium blend of pellets, an informative smoking guide, and a few recipes for mains, sides, cocktails, and desserts. The wired thermometer plugs directly into the smoker, and can monitor the internal temperature of whatever you’re smoking via the control panel or GE SmartHQ mobile app.

Best of all, it’s easy to clean: The interior of the smoker typically requires a quick and gentle scrub with a sponge and warm soapy water after each session. When heavier soiling occurs you can also safely wash the racks and rack supports in a standard dishwasher. Overall, the entire cleaning process is fast, simple, clean, and ash-free.

This smoker isn’t necessarily your best option if you’re planning to feed a large crowd, but it’s more than large enough to cater to a small gathering of close friends. Although similar in design to a toaster oven, the temperature range is limited to 150°F-300°F, which ultimately restricts this smoker’s versatility. While this temperature range is suitable for general smoking applications, increasing the upper range could allow this product to function as more than just a smoker and possibly earn a more permanent place on the countertop – especially if space is limited. The GE Profile Smart Indoor Smoker’s price is currently $799, which I believe is reflective of its quality; however, this price point is a bit steep for most beginners who could benefit from and enjoy this product just as much as avid barbeque enthusiasts.

Given those small downsides, the quality, ease of use, and performance of the GE Profile Smart Indoor Smoker make this a great purchase whether you are a beginner or a barbeque veteran looking to splurge a little to fuel your obsession.

At the time of publishing, the price was $799.
