Sonja Warfield, co-writer for The Gilded Age, is explaining a big piece of what happened on season three, episode two of the HBO hit period piece TV show.
In last night’s episode, Gladys (Taissa Farmiga) and Billy (Matt Walker) planned to have him talk to her father George (Morgan Spector) to ask for her hand. The issue is, her mom Bertha (Carrie Coon) secretly leaked that she was engaged to the Duke of Buckingham (Ben Lamb), complicating the situation.
In the end, Billy ended up not asking George for Gladys’ hand, and broke things off with Gladys.
Now, Sonja is explaining Billy’s thought process.

THR asked, “Do you think Billy basically bows out from asking George to marry Gladys because he, more than Gladys, understands what her position is now?”
She responded, “I think Billy understands not necessarily what Gladys’ position is; Billy understands where he falls and Billy sees the power and influence George Russell wields. He’s from a family of means, but his family will never measure up to the Russells, and Billy Carlton wants to continue to succeed in business and in society. And [George Russell] is a force that he can’t come up against. It’s a no-win situation for him.”
