The Summer Hikaru Died trailer is a best friend’s worst nightmare

On Friday, Netflix released the first official trailer for The Summer Hikaru Died, the upcoming adaptation of Mokumokuren’s 2021 slice-of-life horror manga from anime studio CygamesPictures (Brave Bang Bravern!), slated to premiere in July.

The series centers on Yoshiki, a teenager living in a small town in rural Japan who is inseparable from his classmate Hikaru. The two share a close friendship, despite having very little in common with one another. That all changes, however, after Hikaru is found after going missing during a solo hiking trip in the mountains. After several months of him behaving strangely, Yoshiki begins to suspect whether or not this person is actually Hikaru or… something else.

Ryōhei Takeshita, who previously worked as an episode director on Jujutsu Kaisen and The Heike Story, will serve as both the director and screenwriter for The Summer Hikaru Died. Yūichi Takahashi (FLCL: Shoegaze, Blue Giant) is the character designer for the anime, while Kohei Honda (A Sign of Affection) will serve as the art director.

The animation looks terrific, and the premise alone sounds intriguing enough to give the series a watch, regardless of whether or not you’re familiar with the source material. Here’s hoping that the anime itself can live up to the potential evidenced by its first trailer.

The Summer Hikaru Died will premiere on Netflix in July.
