The VR Headset Of Dreams Starts Shipping In Days

Pimax has provided an update on its long awaited Crystal Super VR headset, which is available to pre-order now and starts shipping on April 7.

One of the most eye-catching feature of the Pimax Crystal Super is its very high resolution panels, providing 3840 x 3840 pixels per eye.

Pimax claims this initial edition provides 50 pixels per degree (PPD), significantly higher than the 34PPD of the Apple Vision Pro and 25PPD of the Meta Quest 3.

Unusually, Pimax is going to follow up this headset with an even higher pixel density version in Q2 2025. However, this is the result of using a different lens array, reducing the horizontal field of view from 135 degrees to 120 degrees.

The Pimax Crystal Super costs $1791, which can be split into a $999 initial payment and 24 monthly payments of $32.99. Pimax knows these headsets are a bit pricey for many buyers. Alternatively you can pay $999 then $697 after the 14-day trial period, saving a few dollars.

However, that does include a pair of 6DoF controllers, which is something. The headset also supports foveated rendering, meaning it has eye tracking.

Pimax uses QLED panels for these headsets, for their contrast-boosting local dimming and high color gamut coverage.

Aspheric glass lenses are also used in order to make the most of the staggeringly high resolution, but this comes with a knock-on negative. While these lenses are of good optical quality and have a wide “sweet spot,” they do not result in a light headset.

This is likely why Pimax does not list the weight of the headset on its product page. Pimax’s earlier Crystal headset weighs 950g — far higher than the 515g of the Meta Quest 3. Much less needs to be crammed into the headset too, as it needs to be plugged into a PC to operate. There’s no operating system, and no battery as it draws power through a cable.

It does what Pimax is known for, maxing out on image quality. The Crystal Super was shown off at CES 2025 in January, where those lucky enough to get a hands-on speak of its super-high clarity and lack of immersion-dimming screen door effect.

Pimax isn’t stopping here, though. It has plans for a 12K headset with dual 6K screens. However, the company has been talking about this headset since 2021, so it may be best to wait for a meaningful update before declaring that the future of VR.
