From eco-friendly glass to sculptural stone, these expert picks are stunning and on-trend.

Recycled Glass

Embrace your sustainable side with recycled glass countertops, which Nicole Alexander, the founder of Siren Betty, likes to incorporate into her projects. She shares that she found a local Chicago company, Gilasi, which manufactures countertops that contain 77-85% recycled content by weight. “Most of the glass is post-consumer container glass and window glass, but some of the glass even comes from damaged hand-blown fixtures,” Alexander says.

There’s no need to sacrifice style in the process, either. As the designer says, “The look is like quartz and terrazzo had a baby!” Plus, she explains, there are many colors and sizes of glass shards to choose from as you customize your countertops.

Detailed Edges

It’s time to think beyond standard countertop edges and embrace those with details. Right now, they’re definitely having a moment, explains Patrice Rios McCollum, the founder of Patrice Nichole Studio. “Think scalloped and reeded profiles that add a sculptural, artisan feel,” she says. “We’re currently working on a kitchen with a reeded natural marble countertop, and it’s absolutely stunning—like jewelry for your cabinetry.

It only makes sense that this look is trending, McCollum adds, noting, “We have been seeing a lot of this type of detail in millwork, it’s time to bring it into our countertops.”

Marble

Interior designer Amy Studebaker admits that marble is never really seen as “trendy” but adds that “classic materials like marble will always be in style.” She notes marble as one of her personal favorites and the material she incorporated into her own home’s kitchen and bathrooms. “I don’t mind the subtle etching and happily embrace the beautiful imperfections,” she says regarding its tendency to patina over time.

Maggie Goodrich, an interior designer at Third Street Architecture, agrees. “In 2025, natural stone is sticking around! As homeowners look to bring more personality into their spaces, natural stone offers the perfect blend of character, beauty, and longevity,” she notes. “Unlike engineered materials, stone evolves with the home—it ages gracefully, gaining charm over time.” And with proper sealing and maintenance, Goodrich says it can last for generations without losing its appeal

Granite

The granite that’s trending today is not the granite that you grew up with, Goodrich explains. “Today’s granite features more natural movement and organic veining, giving it an artisanal, elevated feel,” she says. It’s come a long way from what she refers to as “the glossy, speckled styles of the ’90s.”

Additionally, designers nowadays are embracing honed or leathered finishes, which offer a softer, matte look that enhances granite’s natural beauty without the dated, glossy shine from the past.
