Oh, where have you been, Timothée Chalamet as Bob Dylan in an Oscar-destined biopic?
The first teaser has arrived for director James Mangold’s “A Complete Unknown,” starring Chalamet as the iconic folk singer. Mangold wrote the screenplay with Jay Cocks working from the 2015 book “Dylan Goes Electric!” by Elijah Wald. Chalamet took singing and guitar lessons to play Dylan in the movie, which was shot last year and is now dated for a December release from Searchlight Pictures. And that’s Chalamet singing Dylan’s “A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall,” off his 1963 album “The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan,” in the teaser.
Here’s the official synopsis: “Set in the influential New York music scene of the early ’60s, ‘A Complete Unknown’ follows 19-year-old Minnesota musician Bob Dylan’s (Chalamet) meteoric rise as a folk singer to concert halls and the top of the charts — his songs and mystique becoming a worldwide sensation — culminating in his groundbreaking electric rock and roll performance at the Newport Folk Festival in 1965.”
The cast also includes Monica Barbaro as Dylan collaborator Joan Baez, who also had a tumultuous relationship with the singer; Elle Fanning as Sylvie Russo, based on an artist who dated Dylan in the early ’60s; plus Edward Norton as Pete Seeger, Boyd Holbrook as Johnny Cash, and Scoot McNairy as Woody Guthrie. According to a new interview in Rolling Stone, Mangold said the movie “literally ends within 72 hours after the [Newport Folk Festival] concert in ’65.” He also said that “A Complete Unknown” features live performances shot in-camera with the actors — including Chalamet, who channeled his early musical acumen for the role.
