Inside the Frick Collection’s Young Fellows Ball

Can you tell me about your dress?
Well, during the pandemic, the Frick Young Fellows had this book club that was about Madame du Barry, Louis XV’s lover. At the museum, there are these panels called The Progress of Love that Jean-Honoré Fragonard made for her. She commissioned them, but when she went to pick them up, she was like, “I don’t like them.” They stayed with Fragonard a long time. I’ve always loved them, so when Bach Mai designed my dress, he imprinted one of the panels on the front. It turns out when he was in school, he did one of his thesis projects using a print of this Fragonard. So I was like, “Can we do that?”

It’s incredible. So what’s the day-to-day life of a baroness like?
I think it’s much like the day-to-day life of any other person who is married. I would say baroness is not so much a job title or a duty as it is a name — it’s officially part of my last name now. I’m just so lucky that I married the most wonderful man, and his family is amazing.

Has your DJ equipment ever malfunctioned during a gig?

Susanne Bartsch once booked my partner and me to play a Pride event, but every 45 seconds the music cut out. No one could figure it out. Susanne said, “Darlings, you are amazing. Please don’t feel bad, but I can’t have this at my party. Please stay. I’ll still pay you.” She was so gracious and kind.

What’s your shopping philosophy?

I have very specific ideas of what I like, and I tend to scour stores. I prefer to shop in person, and I also shop a lot. Basically, everywhere I go, I’m shopping. When I travel, I don’t like to buy knickknacks. My souvenirs are clothes.

What brings you here tonight?

When I was a student, I did research at the Frick. It has an amazing reference library. I studied archaeology and mosaic restoration, and now I test paintings for their authenticity. Once, I worked on a Rembrandt and there was an entirely different Rembrandt underneath when we X-rayed it.

You look familiar.

Twenty-one years ago, I was Kevin G. in Mean Girls. But now I have a YouTube channel. It’s like Martha Stewart meets Mister Rogers. Our most-watched video is how to wash your whites to make them the whitest they can be. The secret is this technique called “bluing” — adding a touch of blue dye to the rinse water. If you keep tinting them blue, they will always look white.

What are you loving about the Frick?

To start, the elevators plated in bronze. That’s such a thoughtful detail. The warmth of the bronze is so different from elevators made out of steel or aluminum. It complements the warm grays and the beige and browns in the space so well.

How’s the food?

Oh, it’s fab. I just had these grilled-cheese situations that were wonderful. But I’m not eating too much. I am very busy parading around in my beautiful mask and big shoes.
