What Are Glass Nails—and How to Get the Look

Glass manicures are one of the biggest trends to take the nail world by storm in a long time—and we can’t say we’re too surprised. Not only is this glossy mani super easy to recreate—it’s a straightforward, three-step process—but it’s a versatile nail look in terms of color options and the result is truly mesmerizing. We asked a pro nail artist for the full rundown on what glass nails are and how to recreate them yourself (or what to ask for at the nail salon).  

What Are Glass Nails? 

Glass nails are a layered manicure that uses a metallic magnetic polish and a high-gloss jelly top coat.

“They’re called that because it looks like you’re looking through glass,” explains Elle Gerstein, a celebrity nail artist based in New York City. “It has so much depth, dimension, and movement, creating a unique finish.”

Glass nails can be clear, or you can add any other color on top. Some trending hues right now are blue, purple, and red.

“My personal favorite is a look I created three years ago called ‘Ruby Glass Slippers,’ made by layering a deep sheer red (garnet red) over a gold magnetic base,” says Lily Nguyen, celebrity manicurist and founder of Labo Beauté Salon. “The effect is incredibly unique and mesmerizing, shifting beautifully with the light.” 

How to Get Glass Nails 

Unlike some elaborate nail designs, glass manicures are pretty straightforward. The effect is created through layering polishes and finishes versus intricate art. That said, you can get the look either at home or have a pro do it for you. 

How to Do Glass Nails at Home 

You can find all needed products for glass manicures over the counter, Gerstein says. Start with a dark base coat (ideally black to create some nice depth) followed by a metallic magnetic polish. Gerstein says white and silver give the glass effect, though a pale gold can work, too. 

“The polish is activated using a magnet, held close (but not touching) to the nail for about three to seven seconds, moving in different directions to achieve the desired effect,” Nguyen says. “Once the design is set, the nails are cured under LED light for 30 to 60 seconds. To enhance the look, a sheer color is applied on top—deeper sheer shades such as cobalt blue, emerald green, and deep reds work best for a more dramatic effect.”

How to Get Glass Nails at the Salon 

Sometimes heading to the salon is just easiest—especially if you don’t already own the needed products for glass nails. 

“Timing and technique play a huge role, and it takes practice to perfect. For best results, I always suggest having it done professionally—save yourself the frustration and enjoy the process in a salon setting,” Nguyen says.
