What Is Donald Trump’s Agenda47 And How Will It Impact Different Communities?

As the U.S. presidential election draws closer, Agenda47 has been a topic of conversation among voters. Agenda47 is a list of proposals planned by former president Donald Trump’s campaign, should he get re-elected. Every American needs to understand Agenda47 and how it will impact different communities. This article examines Agenda47 in more detail and explores the wider implications of the proposal.

Accelerate climate change. On President Biden’s first day in office, he ensured that the United States rejoined the Paris Agreement. The Paris Climate Agreement is a treaty where countries take specific actions to fight against climate change. Trump, according to Agenda47, wants to “exit the horrendously unfair Paris Climate Accords.” If elected, Trump, who is an unapologetic climate change denier, would diminish the United States’ transparency and accountability when it comes to addressing climate change. This will have far-reaching effects on everyone living on this shared Earth but more specifically, Black people as well as other marginalized groups, who are most severely and negatively impacted by climate change.

Curb U.S. Immigration. Under the 14th Amendment, “All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and the State wherein they reside.” Agenda47 proposes a ban on birthright citizenship for children of immigrants, eliminating the current policy that grants citizenship to children born in the U.S. In addition, Trump states that from his first day as President, he will make “illegals ineligible for public housing,” and will also prevent them from receiving work permits. Immigrants play a vital role in the U.S. workforce; research from Boston University economist Tarek Hassan indicates that immigrants “help fuel local economies by sparking innovation and driving up wages.” The policies proposed in Agenda47 would severely curb U.S. immigration, which, among other things, would devastate the labor market.

End gender-affirming care. Under Agenda47, Trump vows to end gender-affirming care at the federal level for minors, indicating that under his leadership he will “sign a new executive order instructing every federal agency to cease all programs that promote the concept of sex and gender transition at any age.” 2022 research indicates that gender-affirming care, which can include seemingly small actions like sharing your pronouns, using gender-neutral language, and affirming patients, can lead to more positive health outcomes. Access to gender-affirming care can be life-saving, particularly for transgender adults. A 2023 study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) indicated that gender-affirming care for transgender and nonbinary youth was associated with lower rates of depression and a decreased likelihood of suicide. Eliminating gender-affirming care would have a deleterious effect on the LGBTQIA+ community.

Provide more police protections. Agenda47 proposes that “Republicans will restore safety in our neighborhoods by replenishing Police Departments, restoring Common Sense Policing, and protecting Officers from frivolous lawsuits,” with Trump indicating that he wants to pour more investments into hiring, retaining, and training police officers, increasing “vital liability protections” for them. Trump also wants to reinstitute stop-and-frisk, the ineffective and unconstitutional policy where police were permitted to stop, question, and search people for any reason in New York City based on suspicion. Stop-and-frisk disproportionately impacted Black and Latino communities and reintroducing this policy could, according to The Atlantic, expose these communities to “much greater police surveillance and enforcement.” If Agenda47 were to be implemented, it means that police would be provided with more power and protection, which could be detrimental to those on the receiving end of police brutality and injustice.
