Why Barcelona made the call to drop Viktor Gyökeres interest
An insight into the reasoning behind the call of La Liga champions Barcelona to drop their interest in Sporting CP sensation Viktor Gyökeres has this week been revealed.
The info comes courtesy of Diario Sport, and confirms that, at one point earlier this year, the Blaugrana were giving real consideration to a move for the Swede.
In the knowledge that Robert Lewandowski will soon be on the way out, and with Ferran Torres not yet considered ready to make the step up to first-choice centre-forward, contact was initiated with Sporting over Gyökeres.
In the end, however, Deco and co. were forced to prioritise reinforcements elsewhere.
Aware that the funds are only available for one major attacking signing this summer, it was decided that a new left winger would be sought out instead.
Athletic Club standout Nico Williams, in turn, is expected to land at the Camp Nou over the weeks ahead.
Gyökeres, meanwhile, is predicted to take his talents to the Premier League, leaving Barcelona to ponder what might have been.
