TJ Holmes & Amy Robach Defend David Muir Amid Backlash Over ‘Cinching’ Jacket During LA Fire Coverage

David Muir’s former ABC News constituents have his back.

Earlier this week, the reporter made his way to California to cover the unrelenting LA fires — and got totally ROASTED for pinning back his jacket to appear more “svelte.” If you missed it, you can take a look (below):

ABC News is reportedly “embarrassed and horrified” by the anchor’s “narcism,” but there are two people on his side: former ABC anchors T.J. Holmes and Amy Robach.

During Friday’s episode of their Amy & T.J. podcast — the episode appropriately being titled, Does This Fire Make Me Look Fat? — the co-hosts defended David amid all the backlash. Amy was quick to speak to his professionalism:

“I can attest to the fact that he is a constant professional. He takes his job very seriously and he works very hard not just to give the information right, but to present it in the best way possible. And look, he was covering the wildfires and there were hurricane-force winds described as almost tornadic, so he cinched his jacket as many of us have done in the field and on the set to create a cleaner line.”

She admitted that she’s also cinched her wardrobe many times in the past on air because “television is a visual media,” but T.J. denied ever doing so himself. Outlining the controversy, he explained:

“This is the story: guy covering the fire, people losing homes. He’s standing on camera, he turns, people see that he cinched his jacket and they’re saying he’s only doing this as a matter of vanity … He is being ripped for that reason … He got busted cinching his jacket.”

Amy noted that “by seeing that clothes pin it seemed like his focus was on himself instead of the story he was covering,” but T.J. pointed out a “perspective” critics may be missing:

“The perspective might be missing in that often times — and I don’t know if he does — travel with a producer or even a wardrobe person whose job is — you might be looking at your phone, getting the latest, looking at notes or doing something, and people are pulling and plugging things onto you, the mic and the IFB [in-ear monitor] and all these things. You don’t even know what’s happening to you, and someone could’ve made the decision of, ‘Let me do this with the jacket.’ We just don’t know.”

Yeah, we’re not so sure about that… He added:

“Just a little context: the guy works his butt off. If you don’t like what he did, fine … it’s a lot of be piling on.”
