‘Boy Meets World’ Alum Danielle Fishel Reveals Breast Cancer Diagnosis

Boy Meets World alum Danielle Fishel has revealed that she has breast cancer.

At the start of the latest episode of podcast Pod Meets World, the actress shared, “I was recently diagnosed with DCIS, which stands for Ductal carcinoma in situ, which is a form of breast cancer.” She explained that it was detected “very, very, very early; it’s technically stage zero.”

Fishel assured listeners that she’s “going to be fine,” as she is having surgery to remove it and will receive follow-up treatment. “I’ve had to make a lot of decisions over the last couple of days,” she said.

“The only reason I’m sharing it is, if you’ve ever had those thoughts in your life where someone close to you is diagnosed with cancer, somewhere in your mind you think, ‘What would I do if it were me? What would I do in this situation?,’” she continued. “And for some reason in this situation, I always thought, ‘I would suffer in silence. I would get the diagnosis, I would not tell anyone [except] only my small, small group and I would suck it up. Then, when I’m on the other side of it, I would tell people: I’ve gone through this journey and here’s what I did.’”

She then mentioned that reading Glennon Doyle’s work helped change her mind. “[In her writing], she often talks about how a lot of people like waiting to share their experiences until they’ve come out the other side of it, so that they’re able to say, ‘Here’s the pretty picture of it all, here’s what I’ve learned,’” Fishel explained. “But the place you have the most to learn from is at the very beginning of the story or at the messy middle.”

Fishel said she then shared the news with her immediate family and was only going to tell “a few select friends” including her co-hosts Rider Strong and Will Friedle. She ultimately realized that the more people she opened up about her diagnosis to, the more people she found had shared experiences of themselves or loved ones being diagnosed with cancer.

“The only reason why I caught this cancer while it is still stage zero is because the day I got my text message that my yearly mammogram was coming up, I made the appointment,” she said. The actress noted the importance of making time within her busy schedule to get her checkup. “If it’s time for your appointment [or] if you’ve never had an appointment before, get in there,” she urged listeners. “If you have to find out that you have cancer, find out when it’s at stage zero if possible.”

Fishel also noted that while she “doesn’t have all the answers yet” and is looking into her options for treatment, she wanted to let listeners know because there is a possibly that some plans scheduled for the podcast will have to be put on hold depending on the treatment she decides on.
