Hot Honey Mustard Pretzel Chicken Bites

Think of these as a more grown-up take on classic chicken nuggets, packed with bold honey mustard flavor and sure to be a crowd-pleaser. Using honey mustard-flavored pretzels enhances the seasoning, while the coarsely crushed pretzel pieces create an impressive crunch without frying. A drizzle of hot honey takes them over the top, making each bite irresistibly sweet, savory, and tangy.

Can you use regular pretzels instead of honey mustard pretzels?

Regular pretzels can be substituted for honey mustard pretzels. For a crunchier coating when baked, break them into larger pieces.

Notes from the Food & Wine Test Kitchen

The key to crunchy chicken bites is the coating. The pretzel pieces should be large enough to adhere to the chicken rather than finely crushed. The easiest way to crush them is by placing the pretzels in a ziplock bag and gently smashing them with a rolling pin or the bottom of a heavy skillet. A food processor also works, but be careful not to pulse them too finely.

Make ahead

These bites are best eaten immediately after baking for maximum crunch, but you can also store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to three days. Reheat the bites at 350°F on a baking sheet in the oven until warmed through or in an air fryer. The chicken can be breaded up to one day in advance. Store it on a lined baking sheet, tightly wrapped in plastic, in the refrigerator. When you are ready to bake, coat the chicken with cooking spray and proceed as directed.
