Chocolate Recall Upgraded to Most Severe Status by the FDA

There’s been an update on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) recent chocolate recall. According to an enforcement notice published on January 22, 2025, the FDA classified Cal Yee’s Dark Chocolate Almonds as a Class I threat due to an allergen risk caused by undeclared milk. A Class I recall is defined as “a situation in which there is a reasonable probability that the use of or exposure to a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death,” the FDA notes on its site.

The recent update follows a previous recall from December 12, 2024, wherein Cal Yee Farm’s chocolate and yogurt covered products were recalled due to potential contamination of undeclared milk, wheat, soy, sesame, and almonds—all of which “run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction” if consumed, the report reads. While no illnesses have been reported from the voluntary recall, chocolate-based products should be avoided, most importantly including Cal Yee’s Dark Chocolate Almonds (F-0409-2025).
